The Hoover Dam

On Thursday, we headed off to the Hoover Dam. The coach made several pickups on the way (mainly OAP's who were complaining loudly that the coach was late)!

We passed Lake Mead on route. The lakes' depth is a maximum of 500 ft but they are in a 6 year drought and the water is 80 ft below maximum (which is a lot considering the lake is over 110 miles long)!

We stopped at the Dam and did the tour there. This took us into the powerplant area and further underground to where the pipes take the water from the dam to the powerplant. We then toured the exhibition and got great views of the dam, especially when we walked on the dam and looked down!

We stopped for lunch nearby and had an all you can eat buffet. We were left there for 2 hours, while half the tour had a boat trip on Lake Mead. Thank goodness there was a shop and casino there as we weren't able to sit by the buffet for that length of time!

We then stopped at Ethel M's Chocolate Factory (which is part of the Mars group). We had a quick tour and ate a few samples! Then we went to the giant Cacti Gardens next door.

It took us 2 hours to navigate the Strip as there is so much traffic there but eventually arrived back at the hostel!
