Road Trip to Los Angeles

After getting back from the Hoover Dam, we met up with Justin & Scott. Kate had managed to blag us a lift to Los Angeles with them (saving us a 6 hour trip on a greyhound bus). Thanks so much guys!

We got into LA gone midnight but they gave us a guided tour, showing us the best place to get Thai or Chinese plus drove us along Mulholland Drive, stopping at viewpoints to show us LA by night!

They both were in film school in Florida and Justin has just finished producing his first feature length movie which should be touring the film festivals next year - check out the website for it -
www.cityonahillmovie.com. See you in San Francisco! Thanks again for the lift!

The Hoover Dam

On Thursday, we headed off to the Hoover Dam. The coach made several pickups on the way (mainly OAP's who were complaining loudly that the coach was late)!

We passed Lake Mead on route. The lakes' depth is a maximum of 500 ft but they are in a 6 year drought and the water is 80 ft below maximum (which is a lot considering the lake is over 110 miles long)!

We stopped at the Dam and did the tour there. This took us into the powerplant area and further underground to where the pipes take the water from the dam to the powerplant. We then toured the exhibition and got great views of the dam, especially when we walked on the dam and looked down!

We stopped for lunch nearby and had an all you can eat buffet. We were left there for 2 hours, while half the tour had a boat trip on Lake Mead. Thank goodness there was a shop and casino there as we weren't able to sit by the buffet for that length of time!

We then stopped at Ethel M's Chocolate Factory (which is part of the Mars group). We had a quick tour and ate a few samples! Then we went to the giant Cacti Gardens next door.

It took us 2 hours to navigate the Strip as there is so much traffic there but eventually arrived back at the hostel!

The Canyons Tour

We decided to go on a 3 day tour to the 3 canyons - Grand, Bryce and Zion. We'd seen a tour by Incredible Adventures that was almost half price (due to the fact that they would be filming the trip for a promotional video - which we are in)!

We set off a 7:45am. Its a small group - an Australian called Taran, a Romanian called Georgiana (who asked a lot of questions and was always in the gift shop!), a lovely family from Australia (Janelle, Lionel, Brendan and Hayden, who we'll visit when in Oz), Justin and Scott (who will be filming & taking photos) and our guide, Anderson, a Navajo Indian.

We stopped off at Wal-Mart to stock up on food then we headed into Utah to Zion National Park. We got on the shuttle bus and went to the Temple of Sinawava at the end of the route. We were joined by Jolie, who runs the company we were touring with. We did the Riverside Walk, that runs alongside the Virgin River. When the path ran out, we decided to carry on the walk in the river! The water was icy cold but relatively shallow. That is, until further along, when it eventually reached mid-thigh! By this point we couldn't feel our feet. We walked along The Narrows - a route that is surrounded by high mountains, in a multitude of colours. The views were breathtaking! Luckily, none of us fell in!

We only walked for about half an hour in the river before turning back. We then walked up to the Weeping Rock. Water is forced out of the sandstone rocks and appears like a light shower over the edge of the rock. It was beautiful to stand underneath it and look out over the park. By now, our trousers had dried and we could feel our feet again! We then headed to the Emerald Pools (which are green from the algae in them)!

That evening, we headed to "The Village of Many Nations" at the edge of Zion Park. This was going to be our home for the next few days as we were camping in a TiPi!! We unpacked the van and organised our bedding (there will be 7 of us sleeping in the big TiPi, which is 28 feet in diameter, and the family sleeping in a smaller TiPi next door). Then we had to organise dinner, which was home-made burgers. We made a bit of a mess with the initial burgers until Janelle showed us how to make them properly!! We had dinner round the campfire.

After dinner, Justin & Scott showed us how to make s'mores! You roast marshmallows over the fire. When they are soft, you put one on half a Grams cracker, put a piece of Hershey's chocolate on it and the other half of the Grams cracker and voila! You have your s'mores! They were very delicious!

The next day we rose at 6:30am - it was a tad cold outside (its a good thing that I had a hat and glovers with me)! After breakfast, we made our way to the Grand Canyon. We walked along to Bright Angel Point on the North Rim. The views from here were spectacular! The path at times was quite narrow. At the point, there was a pile of rocks, which we climbed up to get an even better view. It was a little daunting as there was nothing either side to prevent us from going over the edge! Justin & Scott spent half the time perched on the edge of cliffs, aiming to get the perfect shot! Everywhere you looked you saw the canyon - there was nothing else in sight!

Then we went to the North Kaibab Trail and we walked down for about 20 minutes. The trees are turning into their Autumn colours and the place was alive with vibrant reds and oranges! The walk back up proved to be quite steep!!

After lunch, we drove to Cape Royal and walked to Angel's Window, which jutted out over the canyon. At Cape Royal, we posed for photos on the very edge of the cliff. A few months ago, a couple of Australians did handstands on this cliff (much to the shock of everyone watching as there is a 10,000 ft drop off the edge)!

That night, we went to a show at the Village of Many Nations - it was about the Mountain Men who came to America to catch beavers and sell their fur to the British. It was run by Buzzard Eater (who has been a Mountain Man for 30 years) and Little Buffalo (who played the America Flute). They told us stories of the Mountain Men and their encounters with the Native Indians. They also showed us some of the sign language that was developed between the many Indian nations and the Mountain Men.

That night we lit a campfire in the TiPi, which was great as outside, the temperature had dropped to below 10 degrees! We had some s'mores and Anderson told us stories about the Navajo Indians and their history.

The next day, we had to pack up as we would not be returning to the TiPi. We headed off to Bryce Canyon, which is apparently the best of the 3! Bryce is made up of Hoodoos (pillars of rock that are left by erosion). The main area is the Bryce Amphitheatre, which has 4 lookout points. We were dropped off at Bryce Point and made our way to Inspiration Point (that has 3 levels) and then to Sunset Point. The views were outstanding. The Hoodoos kept changing colours as we walked along the rim of the Amphitheatre. We kept looking for faces or creatures in them!

After lunch, we descended into Bryce at Sunset Point, along the Navajo Loop Trail. We dropped about 500 feet down (which was relatively easy). We passed Thor's Hammer (which looks like a marshmallow on a stick, so we re-named it Thor's s'more)! Taran decided to copy the Australians at the Grand Canyon and do a handstand! Luckily, it was away from a cliff edge and against a wall (assisted by Georgiana!)

We walked along the bottom, which was so green. We joined the Queens Garden Trail so that we could head back up. Lionel was pointing out some great shapes in the rocks - his best suggestion was the demented bulldog, sitting on a horse. I couldn't quite see it!

The way back up began quite easily, but towards the end, the path began to zip zag and we climbed quite quickly. We rested several times on the last stretch until we finally reached the top! We were all a little exhausted but it had definitely been worth it. The scenery was fascinating and you felt so small compared to the giant structures all around us!

On the way back, we stopped at the Navajo Lake before arriving back in Vegas. This trip was the best thing that we have done so far - we had so much fun and it was so peaceful and beautiful out there (you couldn't see or hear cars and were away from all forms of technology)!

Viva Las Vegas!

We're staying in the USA Hostel in Vegas that comes with a swimming pool, which is great considering that it is over 30 degrees every day! We're in Downtown Las Vegas, a short walk away from the Fremont Street Experience! On our first night, we walked around there, looking at the casinos, street performers and all the bright lights!

During the day on Friday, we went down The Strip to see the casinos. We took a bus to the end and walked back, passing Luxor (with its sphinx and giant pyramid), Excalibur (with its wizard in a window and turrets), New York New York (with its miniature New York skyline, Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and Statue of Liberty - my favourite), MGM Grand (with its Golden Lion), The Bellagio (with its very impressive fountain display), Caesars Palace (which has lots of statues like the Romans had), The Mirage (with its large water feature in front of it), The Venetian (complete with the Bridge of Sighs and St Marks Square), Treasure Island (with its two ships outside) and the Stratosphere (very tall tower with rides at the top of it).

On Saturday, I went for a pre-breakfast swim which was great (and just a little cold)! During the day, we went around some of the casinos! They are massive. We spent about half an hour trying to find our way out of Caesar's Palace! In The Venetian, they have a canal running the length of the casino, complete with gondolas if you wanted to have a ride (and be serenaded to)! In New York New York, they have recreated many of the areas in New York including Little Italy and even have smoke coming from the man holes on the floor!

That night we went to the Coyote Ugly bar in New York New York. It was very like the bar in the film, complete with girls dancing on the bar. Then we went to the Nine Fine Irishmen pub to have dinner and listen to the band playing there. We managed to walk past The Bellagio as the fountain show was about to start which was great! The fountains were dancing to "Viva Las Vegas"! We then watched the pirate show outside Treasure Island, which had a crap (or non-existing storyline) but the pyrotechnics were good!

On Sunday we went into the MGM Grand and saw their Lion enclosure. They had two young female lions there who were playfully running around after balls that the trainers threw to them. Later on, we went up Stratosphere and onto one of the rides - "Insanity". It is 909 ft off the ground and it hangs you over the edge of the tower, angles the seats so you face towards the ground and then spins you around! It was great - the views from there are amazing!

On the way back to the hostel, we walked past the Wedding Chapels and even met a British couple who'd gotten married in one a few days earlier. They were taking photos as they'd forgotten to bring their camera (they'd got engaged on the Tuesday and were married by Thrusday evening!) They took us inside the Chapel so that we could see what they were like. Its not bad but I can think of better places to get married in! On the outside, there was a 'drive-through' option - a bit like MacDonalds, where the Vicar lent out of a booth and the whole service took about 5 minutes. We saw a couple get married this way - they didn't even turn the engine off!!

That night we went to New York New York and went on the Manhatten Express roller coaster ride that goes around the outside of the hotel/casino. It was great - it got upto 67 mph, climbing 433 feet and had a 108 ft drop, 180 degree twist and a negative g-force!

Then we went into Caesar's Palace to gamble! We played the slot machines (very badly & our roommate Jess had to show us how to play them!) Then we went to the Roulette tables. The minimum bet was $10 so we got $20 of chips and tried our luck! Unfortunately, we didn't become millionaires. In fact, I didn't win at all!! Kate won $10 but re-gambled it!

We got back to the hostel at 2am (which was great planning as we are due to go on a trip to the Canyons tomorrow, leaving at 7:45am!!)

Trains, Trains and more Trains!

On Monday, we got on the train in Niagara Falls heading towards Buffalo. The trip to Las Vegas will take a few days - its a good thing that the trains are more comfortable than the ones in the UK!

We arrived in Buffalo at lunchtime and had 11 hours before our next train that evening. Unfortunately, we were on the outskirts of Buffalo and there were no tourist things around. So we went to the nearest Mall for a bit of shopping and then went to see "You, Me & Dupree" at the nearby cinema - it cost us $3 which is about one pound fifty!

Back on the train we got into our sleeping bags for the overnight journey to Chicago. The train arrived on Tuesday and was late arriving here so we only had a couple of hours before leaving. We stepped outside the station once - for a breath of fresh air!

Our next train journey is due to take 36 hours! We're going to Salt Lake City and are due to arrive at 11:30pm on Wednesday night. It wasn't as bad as we thought I'd be - they have an observation lounge on the train where you can watch the world go by. We got spectacular views going through the Colorado Rockies and along the Colordao River! Later that night they even showed films on the train - we watched Ice Age 2! We also got chatting to the conductor who let Kate wear his hat!!

The train was late getting into Salt Lake City (they always seem to run late) and only arrived at 1:20am! We got a taxi to the hostel and fell into bed at 2am, glad to be sleeping on a proper bed. Unfortunately, we had to leave at 8am the next morning for the final part of our journey - a greyhound bus to Las Vegas (taking 9 hours)!

Finally we arrived in Vegas to scorching heat! Its only taken 4 days to cross most of America but it was a fun journey & we got to see some great views!

To The Falls!

We did manage to have a Manhatten - we'd been walking in Central Park and came across the Boathouse so stopped for lunch (and an afternoon drink). Neither one of us liked it!! It is made from 75ml Southern Comfort, 25ml Rosso Vermouth, a dash of Angostura Bitters and is served over crushed ice with a glacier cherry!

We arrived in Niagara Falls on the Canadian side mid afternoon (after going through customs whilst still on the train!) That night we walked down to see them and they were all lit up.

On Sunday, we went on the Maid of the Mist tour, wearing our lovely blue rain macs! The view from the boat is amazing and we only got a little wet! A group of Koreans asked if they could have a photo taken with us so we agreed! We then walked up to the Whirlpools.

That night we went back to the falls to see them lit up again and there was a firework show over them which was quite a big event!

We're getting the 10:30 train tomorrow morning to take us to Las Vegas (eventually)!

New York, New York

We arrived in NYC on Saturday afternoon in 27 degree weather, which was great cause it was a bit colder when we left the UK! That evening, we walked around Central Park (which is near our hostel) and then went down to Times Square, which was very busy. The next day we took a sightseeing bus tour around the city which lasted until mid afternoon - we went through Downtown and Uptown Manhattan and Brooklyn. In the evening, we did the Night Tour which showed most of the tourist sights all lit up! It was a bit cold by then!

Monday was 9/11 so we headed down to Ground Zero. There were so many people around there and lots of police and fire people in full uniform. They were doing minute silences at the times that the towers were hit and when they fell and 200 family members of those who dies read the list of the 2749 people that died. It was very emotional there. We then went to Battery Park where they have placed the massive Globe from the World Trade Centre, with an eternal flame in front of it.

We headed up to Wall Street & the NY Stock Exchange and then over Brooklyn Bridge and back again (which is a 2 mile walk). That afternoon, we walked through China Town - the McDonald's there is written in Chinese under the big M! We had lunch at a place called Katsi's Diner, which is used in the film When Harry Met Sally. The sandwiches were so big that we couldn't finish them! That night, we took the Staten Island Ferry to get a view of the Statue of Liberty and of Downtown Manhattan. The sun was setting as we went across and there was a gorgeous sunset! On the way back, they had lit two beams to represent the Twin Towers which was an amazing sight.

On Tuesday, we went up the Empire State Building. It was a really sunny day and you could see for about 15 miles in all directions. We had an audio guide from Tony the Cabbie which was amusing! We then went into Macy's - its a shame we're on a limited budget or I could quite easily have spent a fortune there! That night we went to see The History Boys at the Broadhurst Theatre, which is off Broadway. It was really great - it comes out in film in the UK in October and I recommend watching it!

We went to Bloomingdales on Wednesday and we bought their trademark Little Brown Bags! We then did a tour of Grand Central Station which is massive and has over 100 train lines! We also had a piece of New York Cheesecake there which tasted great but got a little too sickly towards the end! We walked up 5th Avenue and looked in the designer shops. In Tiffanys, we went up to the engagement & wedding ring floor - oh how they sparkled!!!!

That night we went to see the Yankees play. We worked out (roughly) how to keep score - we saw 4 home runs and quite a few strike outs. We had a hot dog & giant pretzel there (to fit in - although most fans seemed to keep ordering from the walking stand vendors especially the 2 kids in front of us that ended up having a sugar rush!) The Yankees ended up winning 8-4! The game lasted 3 & a quarter hours and there were 52,279 people there (although the upper tier did look quite empty). We did a Mexican Wave that went round 6 times!

On Thursday, we went to see the Statue of Liberty (in the rain and fog!!!). The view wasn't so bad from the base of the statue - the fog had cleared a bit, although the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building were only half visible. We then went to Ellis Island and had a tour of what the immigrants went through when the first arrived. That afternoon, we went through Greenwich Village and tried to find the building that they used in Friends - we think we found it but we're not quite sure!!!

Today we plan to walk around Central Park a bit more (and drink a Manhattan!). Tomorrow morning, we're leaving at 7am to get the train to Niagara Falls.
